Education should not be a luxury; it is a must for individual’s and society’s development. Unfortunately not everyone has access to education or goes to school every day. To provide equal opportunities for all to education, busuu.com works with the NGO ‘Cameroon Association for the Protection and Education of the Child‘ (CAPEC).
CAPEC has built a school for orphans and children from poor families in the area of Nkolfoulou. Since it was built in February 2009, the school has grown a lot. Its objective is to offer a classroom for each of the six grades. The school is still missing the last classroom and is hoping to be able to include it in time for the children to reach the last grade. In September, the first generation finished the fourth class. You can support this project, too, simply make a donation online.
In December 2009, busuu.com won the European Language Label and donated the prize money to CAPEC. Since then, we have been supporting the project and this year we will again make a special Christmas donation to CAPEC to keep the school growing.
You can help, too! If you make a donation before the 31st of December 2011, you even help CAPEC in the Open Challenge of the GlobalGiving Foundation. This foundation offers a fundraising opportunity for nonprofit organizations working around the world. If CAPEC raises $4,000 from 50 donors in this challenge, they will be given a permanent spot on the GlobalGiving’s website and this way have much more possibilities to raise permanent funds for their projects.
Take this opportunity and donate now! Your donation will help the school project and CAPEC raise their chances to get a permanent spot on the GlobalGiving website.
A huge thank you to everyone who has already donated.
As you probably know, busuu.com won last week an European Award for Innovation in Language Learning. The price is compensated with 1,500 EUR and we decided to donate this money to the Cameroon Association for the Protection and Education of the Child (CAPEC). We chose Cameroon for the destination, as our website has its name from the language “Busuu“, spoken in this country by only eight people.
The work done by CAPEC is really impressive – they have special programs to fight child labour and child marriage, they run a HIV/AIDS Sensitization Program and are in general involved in children education in the poorer rural areas of Cameroon. Our money will be used to construct a school for children in the Nkolfoulou neighbourhood located in the Centre Province of Cameroon.
If you want to collaborate as well by yourself, you can do it in several ways. You can easily donate money in order to e.g. sponsor a child for a full school year, or help them organizing a summer program for orphans. If you want to get involved personally, you can also volunteer in their schools as a teacher which will be for sure an unforgettable personal experience. At the end, every donation or activity counts!
We from busuu.com firmly believe that education is the most efficient way out of poverty – so we are very glad that we could make our small contribution. We will update you on this blog about the further progress of this collaboration!
