To become comfortable with new words, practise by using the word in your writing, speaking and everyday thoughts.

The more you use and think about new words, the better you can remember them. In order for a word to become a part of your vocabulary, you have to use and hear it in several ways.

The key to building up a good vocabulary is to be curious and to keep practising what you have learned.

  1. Practise saying the word and listen to others to get the pronunciation right.
  2. Try to learn the word and its meaning the first time you see it.

  5. Vary the words: Try to make them plural and use them in different sentences.
  6. Repeat the word many times in your mind!

That’s why you should help other people learning your language by correcting their exercises in a clear and constructive way.

  • Use the toolbar above the correction area to highlight any mistakes – for example, put them in bold or in a bright colour.

  • Explain why you’ve highlighted the word or phrase and suggest a better alternative.
  • Give the post’s author a tip to help him avoid making mistakes
  • Leave an encouraging note to the post’s author to help them stay motivated and continue learning!

The National Geographic Picture is part of our Live Units, access them:

  1. Via your regular course structure. As this is an essential tool to practise your writing skills, you will see the Live Unit icon Live Unit in all your courses. Just click on the Live Unit and choose National Geographic Picture.
  2. If this is not enough, you can also access the National Geographic Picture through the Live Unit link of your Resources menu whenever you want. The Resources menu is in your home area and in your course area.
  3. You also have a direct access to the writing exercises using the National Geographic icon on the left hand side of your home area.

Remember that our Live Units also include daily updated Video Units with interesting videos from various sources as National Geographic, BBC Earth, etc. Comment on your favourite topic, for example animals, nature, travelling, news etc.

If you are learning English on busuu.com, The Guardian news articles will help you improve your reading comprehension. If you stumble across an unknown word, just look it up in the integrated dictionary provided by Macmillan.

Your learning experience is very important to us. That is why we have extended our list of Live Unit sources and now offer even more diversity than before. If you are a Premium MemberPremium Member, you can now watch interesting videos about nature, travel, science and news. As usual, you’ll be able to write a comment about what you’ve watched and have this comment corrected by the community.

There are two ways to access the videos:

1. The Live Units are included in your Intermediate level courses, usually appearing every 4 or 5 units, and you will recognise them by the TV icon . This can be found in your home area, but also in your language area, where you see the unit you are currently working on. To navigate through the level, just click on the arrows on the left and right. Click on the “Start” button to begin the unit.

Live Units2. If after this you are eager to do more Live Units, you can access them any time via your Resources menu, both in your home area and your language area. This way, you can access the video overview directly and choose the one you find most interesting:

Write a short comment about the video and send it to our community’s native speakers who will then correct your comment. Of course, you will be rewarded with busuu-berriesbusuu-berry for your efforts!
