busuu goes to Mallorca

Day 1 – Away we go…

One fine Thursday morning, around 4.30am, we didn’t mind the sound of our alarms waking us up as it was time for the busuu annual team trip to… Mallorca – woo hoo!

After a short 2-hour flight our busuu family (of 40) and one blow up unicorn arrived in Palma. There we made our way to the fancy ME Mallorca hotel.  Upon arrival we were greeted with a refreshing welcome drink, which was needed after the early start! We checked in and rushed to the poolside to make the most of the sunny weather after escaping the rain in Blighty. An afternoon of relaxing by the pool or on the beach ensued…not a bad way to spend a Thursday hey?

Our CEO Bernhard, me and a few helpful elves ventured out to find a tiny tapas place. There we have bought the entire stash of baguettes made up with jamon and queso for everyone to enjoy by the beach. A few daredevils braved the open sea (kind of) with a very bumpy ride on a banana boat: luckily no broken bones!

Strategy Session

That evening we had a strategy session to learn about the last quarters’ achievements. Moreover, what’s coming up in Q4. Our senior management team presented a few slides to show off the amazing work that all our teams had been pushing out. These sessions are a great way to get an overview of what we can collectively achieve in just 3 months. Go team busuu!

Following the strategy session we all enjoyed an amazing poolside buffet, which included paella, meats and sushi. Also there were unusually spicy padron peppers. Our Spanish team members can confirm that almost ALL of the peppers were spicy. By definition it is only ONE in a few padron peppers that should be spicy. Rumour has it that the person who picks this special spicy padron pepper out of the lot usually has to pay the bill. So you can imagine how worried our Spanish colleagues were.

Day 2 – Ahoy matey!

Bright and early the next morning (perhaps too early for those with sore heads) we were taken for a secret activity. We were dropped at the main harbour, where we boarded our very own Catamaran, blow-up unicorn in tow!

We sailed for 2 hours until we reached the island’s nature reserve. Here we anchored for the majority of the day, playing with our blow-up unicorn, snorkelling. Also we enjoyed a very nice lunch with a few drinks before finally cruising back to the harbour. It was a beautiful day!

On the last night we had a BBQ at Mood Beach. It had a beautiful view over the bay…the food was delicious! After an emotional speech by Bernhard, which had a few of us in tears (happy tears!), we enjoyed a live band and some traditional Salsa dancing. After we made our way to the dance floor to give it a try. It has resulted in a few bump and grinds the rest of the night – not a topic for this blog!
