Last week, Busuu’s AI-powered Smart Review took home an ELTons award at the 18th British Council ELTons Innovation Awards 2020.
After three rounds of rigorous judging, an expert panel of independent judges chose Smart Review as the winner of the Digital Innovation category. The win was announced at a virtual awards ceremony last Thursday.
Organised by the British Council, the ELTons Awards is an annual celebration of innovation in English language teaching (ELT). This year, entrants included a range of leading apps, courses and projects from 35 countries across six continents.
Commenting on the award win, Busuu’s Co-Founder and CEO Bernhard Niesner said: “Artificial intelligence has made its way into education and it’s amazing to see how useful it can be for learners. We’re incredibly honoured to win an ELTons Award – congratulations to the entire Busuu team!
Smart Review: AI-powered language learning
A big challenge for language learners is knowing what to study and when. Our Smart Review tool alleviates this challenge by using machine learning algorithms to identify exactly what vocabulary and grammar each individual learner needs to review, surfacing the right content at the right time.
The model that powers Smart Review ensures that learners spend their time focusing on exactly what they need to practise, providing a personalised experience that allows them to take their skills to the next level.
“Busuu’s core belief is that we believe amazing things happen when we learn together and combining human interactions, expert-created courses and smart learning technology is the best way to learn a language,” commented Neil Ballantyne, Lead Product Manager for Learning Experience at Busuu.
“That fusion is also true of different teams working together. The Smart Review is a great example of collaboration between language experts, machine learning specialists and our engineering teams; working together to personalise each and every individuals’ learning journey.”
